00:02 Jason Atwood: A This is the 112th episode of GodFulks Weekly for the 4th week of October 2012., this episode of Min. This is the 112th episode of CloudFocus Weekly for the 4th week of October 2012. This episode is titled Mini Size Me. Conflicts we get sponsored by Arkus, you're gonna be expert host cheese now would join joining me co-host 112 painful painful podcast can't believe you listen this Justin it'll seem Justin. How are you doing today? Till that lead up I'm doing just fine. I love that I do that while I'm doing the lead in I and stuff. It's the worst episode ever. All right, we have a blog post to talk about this week, of course, recap of Cloud of Cloud of Cloud of Cloud of Cloud. Because it was, well, we'll just recover that.
Jason Atwood: Have a little bit of the Apple announcements,
Justin Edelstein: Oh. Well, let's talk about that part. Forget what everyone's doing.
Jason Atwood: And then we'll make our cloud folks add picks of the week and we will do that. So let's get going with the blog post, you were up this week and you wrote out, what is it, a Salesforce winter live view or something? Yeah, you know, we always do,
Justin Edelstein: And I typically do the rapid release notes. blog posts and people tend to like them. And this time someone else wrote the rapid release note blog post, which kind of cramped my style. So I decided I'll wait till it's out and do one called live look. Right. So looking now that it's out and actually been able to play with some of the features, not just words on a page, which ones we like, which ones we've used, which ones we've. you know which ones we've you know we've taken a liking to and i've also just done a little you know i pulled called out a little section called trouble in winter wonderland because this has been one of the rockier releases that i can recall oh no for me at least no way i've had a Nope.
03:08 Justin Edelstein: Well, alright, in recent memories.
Jason Atwood: All right, the release that they pushed off after releasing half of it and pushed off the other half for three months Or two months that was not too
Justin Edelstein: Much it did they were sick It was like six weeks after they pushed the first version this one had some rocky issues in it that I can't recall them having You know at least two issues that have affected either us or some of our clients and I actually called out a good thing that there's the known issue site now. Who knew? Well, I did. Well, I know, but as of too much though, I didn't know that. I haven't really publicized it too much yet. It's still being integrated into the success portal, the ideas, answers, community,
Jason Atwood: Blog, community. It's built on a whole different platform. Why not just make it look and feel like... It's not though. It's part of that website.
Justin Edelstein: Yeah, it looks different though. It looks a few different. Well, anyway, they're tagging things Winter 13 and I've linked to them all in the blog post so you can see anything that's tagged Winter 13 that's a known issue that's out there in-case you're running into things. I call that some really good things, some cool items. Give me your favorite thing. Give me your favorite thing that I call the cre HEM DEH-CREM of Winter 13. Give me your favorite 13 in Winter. Favorite 13. Many who-on events. Alright. All right.
Jason Atwood: It's also the thing that broke the Google Calendar Sync on Appearless Google Calendar Sync, which a lot of people use. Bro, something we wrote as well.
Justin Edelstein: They changed the API object for the attendee of an event. Although I didn I didn't think that would break our product because it's, you know, API backwards. Hold on, let me just say, this is not a public product. It's something that we use internally.
Jason Atwood: Internally something cool It's a thing that sends you a notification when someone accepts. Send you an email.
Justin Edelstein: It's a missing feature. It's a built-on old API, so I don't know why the new... I mean, it's not really deprecated. Anyway, you know, go read it. There's a few features I called out that I liked. Again, I if you just are looking for a link of known issues for 1 to 13 It's linked in the blog post you could the out.
Jason Atwood: There you go blog that our think comm go get it Next up cloud force New York the recap we were there we H were there cap
Justin Edelstein: If you're at Dreamforce, or if you watched any of the YouTube videos from Dreamforce You were essentially at Cloud Force.
Jason Atwood: Yeah- It was a word for word. Other than the opening wasn't MC Hammer, it was the Harlem Tabernac Require. Okay. And the- and instead of doing- there's Hone of the stories they swapped out, they did Toyota. Oh, they did France. Yeah, instead of Work Day or Not Work Day Work.com or Oh, they did the Work.com I don't know. They did they swapped out somebody, but it was very very Familiar, but it was, I mean again, it's really meant for people to go to Dreamforce, right? That's It's why we don't sponsor because it's sort of It's too close. It's just too close to Dreamforce if they did it in like February I could be like oh well Let's let's sponsor and let's go in there It's right after Dreamforce. It's the same slides.
06:21 Jason Atwood: It's the same deck. It's the same video. Yeah, but it's a nice feeling. Like, what's nice about Cloudforce, it's a little bit more... When you walk around Cloudforce, it feels like old Dreamforce, and it's very close. You see people constantly, as opposed to in between 10, you know, venues. Even the seating and arena, like it was, I don't know, 5,000 people or whatever. You were really close. Like I wasn't VIP at the session, but I was really close when we walked in. You could sit anywhere you wanted. It was great. So I really liked it. I- I skipped the keynote. Yeah, you were talking to the client, but that's fine. So it was good. I mean we did a little one hour power hour at the at the MVP.
Justin Edelstein: We did. Out in front of the command center. The command center. We were answering questions. Questions.
Jason Atwood: Live questions. Live questions. Just kind of interesting. From people coming up asking us some things. Having fans of the podcast show up is always fun. Yeah that was fun.
Justin Edelstein: And oh and that just quick day sort of you know. It was a quick day. day so long day man I went home and fell right asleep yeah it was a Friday
Jason Atwood: I went right to sleep yeah and slept for like three hours if you're the coordinator of the cloud for cloud force not cloud focus always gets me tour here's a couple of things one Thursdays are better than Fridays Friday's people just want to bail. Like, Friday afternoon people want to go home. Like, they don't want it. So, I would do an event on a Thursday or Wednesday, Thursday, rather than a Friday, and it was probably availability of Javits Center. That'd be one thing. But other than that, I thought it was really well done. So, that's the one thing? Yeah, the one, you know, the lunch was nice. It was a cocktail hour afterwards. I don't like the way they do the lunch at the Cloud Force. Oh, it's just sort of handout? Like, walk around.
Justin Edelstein: Like You can wait in this massive line for some vegetables Right And a bag of potato chips And then there's just people walking around with like quarter wraps But the cookies were good Cookies and brownies I
Jason Atwood: Didn't even have any It was good I was being good You were being good Alright, speaking of being good Apple yesterday did some announcements What'd they do here? what? I heard they announced an iPad 4 They did Like, not really A new new iPad So they announced a bunch of stuff. Well, first of all, they did a streaming version of the announcement on Apple TV. Oh, it's like live streaming. And you could stream it on Safari. Yeah, on the Internet. Only on Safari.
Justin Edelstein: They knew what browser you were using. Pretty much.
Jason Atwood: So I watched it on my iPad. It was great. Had streaming the whole time. Worked pretty good. But it was... It was neat to actually watch it and I didn't follow any of the blogs. Like usually, I'm following all the blogs and the live blogging. They must be mad because who needs that? Just watch it directly. Let me ask you a question. Sure. I have an iPad. Go on. I have an iPad.
Justin Edelstein: IPad original as they call it. iPad one.
Guest: The original iPad. Do you use that on top of your dinosaur?
Jason Atwood: Or just when your dinosaur is not in the room with you.
Justin Edelstein: You know there are people that, you know, don't have the luxury of getting a... Having a dinosaur? I have three dragons.
09:31 Guest: Ha! Okay. Okay. Are you Khaleesi? I am. Alright.
Justin Edelstein: So I feel like it's time to upgrade from the original iPad to a new tablet. Mm-hmm. And obviously I'm gonna stay inside the Apple community, so I'm invested there. Mhm. Of these two products that they've unveiled yesterday, the new iPad 4, which is basically the iPad 3 on steroids, and the iPad Mini.
Jason Atwood: What should I be looking for? Which one should I go for? Well, is this you, the person who said you don't use your iPad, never use it, don't really find the use for? Or is this you that have since changed your mind and really liked your iPad and basically keep it beside your bed and read it every morning?
Justin Edelstein: It's the surfing the internet, checking my email, going on Twitter, going on Facebook. I find that those are like my four big uses and then occasionally it's on Netflix. Does it ever leave your house?
Jason Atwood: It never leaves my house. Would it if it were lighter and smaller?
Justin Edelstein: Yeah, I think it would. And it would come on vacation with me. That's where, actually yes, it leaves my house when I go away. It doesn't leave my house, like it's not here with, we are in the podcast studio, it is not with me. Do you watch a lot of videos on it?
Jason Atwood: Occasionally. Do you have another, how many iPads do you have in your house? Right now, two.
Guest: What's the other one? They're both the same version? Okay.
Jason Atwood: So for you, so let's talk about what they announced and then I'll tell leave We'll leave that as something that people jump into so they announced a bunch of stuff new IMAX thinner They. The thin and awesome. Oh, yeah new Mac minis Then they needed a refresh on well, then the IMAX have something called a fusion drive which is very cool. It's an SSD card SSD drive and solid state and a hard drive combined and the software basically moves things onto the SSD Based on how much you use it to make things very fast So you can have a slick so you kind of can you have a three terabyte drive But it performs like an SSD because it moves the stuff to use the most onto the SSD Wow.
Justin Edelstein: Yeah When is that coming to my? MacBook Pro Next time.
Jason Atwood: You don't need it because your MacBook has all SSD.
Justin Edelstein: Yeah, but 3 terabyte drive in it. Yeah, that's a size thing.
Jason Atwood: That's a size and battery thing, not a size thing. Alright, so a new version of iBooks has a couple new features in it. It has a cloud, light, syncing, whatever. It's the hardware stuff. Yeah, no, I'm going to get to get to the hardware stuff. my butt. I want to talk about say no. Oh and I'm I get it for you if you're only going to connect up to monitors, then it's great and maybe use it occasionally But when I want to use occasionally, I still want a 15 inch. Anyway, moving on. So they announced iPad updates So they updated the current iPad 3 to the iPad the coin the fourth generation I don't know. It's like so hard a new iPad the new iPad fourth gen something Anyway, they just take the old one they put lightning in it.
12:54 Justin Edelstein: They put a faster chip Like a much, faster chip like a super fast. It's a dual something chip. Yes, I was reading that it like blows it away Yes,
Jason Atwood: So there's that but same size same weight same whatever It's the old iPad with lightning faster chip I think maybe a faster different Wi-Fi but other than that and maybe LTE if you for the wireless I think maybe other one had that Then they now say I've had mini, which is a 7.9 inch versus 9.7. 7.9 versus 9. Under a pound,.68 of a pound. It's not even a much smaller. Not much that much smaller. Same cover as a new, you know, the cover folding thing. Is it the same screen? No, 7.9 versus 9.7. Yeah, that size. Is it the same screen? It's not a retina.
Justin Edelstein: One of me is a glass. Like, you know how, you know, one of my... A little bit of bugaboo about the iPad is that it, I'll go away and I'll be outside and it's hard to, oh yeah,
Jason Atwood: Yeah, yeah, same, same, that same deal. Same deal. It's not gonna replace outside reading, whatever. But,
Guest: Under a pound, so 0.-6-8 of a pound, smaller.
Jason Atwood: Thinner bezel, so it can be held in one hand. Got a nice, it's got all, you know, it's got lightning, it starts at 16, there's gonna do both, 16, 32, 64, and with cellular.
Guest: And for you, so now I'll get back to your question. Yeah,
Jason Atwood: Which one I guess. For you I would get the iPad Mini. Mini. And here's why. Go on. You would travel with it. I will lightness and so if it were not a 1.5 pounds But about under under a pound almost down to a half pound for probably throw it into your bag more often sure You already have two bigger screen ones So if you continue on to watch I like Netflix like in bed You probably would keep the old one and just watch it on that Yeah, right and the other one is the new one because it's probably gonna perform a little better Yeah, but Netflix is, there's no performance issue with Netflix. Oh, whatever. Okay. So that's what I would say is the iPad Mini. The question for me, owner of Mini, You're just gonna get both.
Jason Atwood: Way too many.
Guest: No, I don't think it'll actually upgrade because I, because lightning,
Jason Atwood: Because here's the thing. I feel like there's a fourth gen. A fourth gen iPad coming up, the real one, that's not just the update. It's like the 4S to the 5. This is the 4S of iPads. This is not the 3S? This is the iPad 3S, but not the Mini. The Mini is a new model.
Guest: So I'll get the new model because it's new, so the halves, the habit. But I was thinking because I have a Mi-Fi which I use for connectivity,
Jason Atwood: And I have the iPhone 5 which I can connect up for AT&T LTE very fast, but I always like to have another service just in case. So I was thinking I carry around this my fly every day of my life you can get rid of that sucker I can get rid of that get an iPad. I pad mini with Verizon LTE in it and Maybe I'll carry around that as my iPad. I carry around every day leave my other iPad hotspot You know be a hotspot and it'll leave my other iPad sitting at home whatever with the stack of other iPads
16:00 Guest: It'll be go down the list of people you know the Mine goes to my wife's, my wife's goes to the family. I imagine,
Justin Edelstein: When can you buy these things?
Jason Atwood: So you can order... Did you already order yours? No, because you can't get these cellular ones until November. How about the non-6-I-don't-buyers? Order it, order it Friday morning.
Justin Edelstein: Alright, so that's... I'm gonna have mine before you and you're gonna... I hate me. No,
Jason Atwood: No, because I want the cellular one. Oh, okay. This time I want the cellular one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. For this one purpose. And that really bothered me. Because I'm swapping out a device. Like, to me, that's the justification. I'm taking a device that I carry with me every day and I'm swapping it with another device that I'm gonna carry with me and I'm gonna get less weight in my bag every day, which is... A plus. Okay. Last up on our agenda. This is just a silly little thing. This is an awesome article. I've actually been thinking about this article. I read this the other day. The article is entitled, What Star Trek Technologies Are 21st Century Scientists Making Reality?
Guest: It's on this place called, what is it called? PSF. have. Okay, does that stand for something? No. Anyway. Idea. Oh, powered by the garden.
Jason Atwood: The guardian? The what? Anyway, kind of a cool new look, talking about technology and what sort of what sort of coming real. You know, obviously, we've seen things like cellular phones and things like that have communicators. But they kind of list out a couple like transporters. That's the only thing I care about. Transporters? Yep.
Justin Edelstein: So... Just teleport me somewhere. Yeah, so just beam me home. Like from Dreamforce. Just beam me home? That's all. All I want to do is get beamed home from Dreamforce.
Jason Atwood: The one that I thought was interesting. So they talked about... It takes too long to get home. I just beamed. They talked about androids and nanites and... tricorders, whatever. I thought hypo spray was cool because in Star Trek land you know. I'm not Star Trek-y. The only thing I know is actually transporting.
Justin Edelstein: None of this other stuff is really all that exciting.
Jason Atwood: Oh very cool stuff but anyway hypos spray when when glared when you went to the doctor instead of getting a a shot They do this hypo spray and they go, and it would just give you whatever you need to go right into your skin and you didn't have to get all this instantly healed you. So they talked about how it's being generated by MIT's lab. And a great article. It's on PSFK.com. You can look for it. Star Trek Technology Reality. Kind of a neat little thing. They talk about cooking devices.
Guest: Not really on the cloud news, but I like it anyway.
Jason Atwood: Yeah, sometimes we have to just go away from stuff.
Justin Edelstein: So I guess the, just going back to the, cause I just clicked on the homepage of this thing.
Jason Atwood: The iPad. Are we really on? You what you need to buy? This is like, all right, go ahead. No, no, no, I'm not.
Justin Edelstein: The iPad announcements. it would seem like we're timed really well to just Completely kill off any hype that these Microsoft surface devices are are garnering at the moment.
19:07 Guest: Yeah, I mean From I'm an Apple fanboy.
Jason Atwood: So it's kind of hard. It doesn't matter what they release I've read the reviews of the Michael though the like burbs of the reviews of the Microsoft surface Tablets and basically they all say They're a little bit buggy. They're a little bit hard to use. They're a little bit not very built very well and The the environment where is the community of apps like there's no Facebook and no Twitter app Yeah, it's ridiculous to launch these days without that quote
Justin Edelstein: From David Pogue Surface is a brilliantly conceived machine whose hardware will take your breath away but whose software will take away its.
Jason Atwood: Yeah. And a lot of the articles are coming out saying there's no reason to own anything else other than iPad in the tablet market. There's just no reason unless you just hate Apple.
Justin Edelstein: There are, I have friends who are like I'm not buying that. I'd rather have my Samsung whatever or whatever. Nexus 7. Whatever those things are. See you next time.
Guest: That's the thing about the iPad mini, not necessarily, you know, Apple always has a premium.
Jason Atwood: They start at $329. So some of these, some of these do $200, some of these do, you know, you can have a $200, I think the Nexus 7 is $220 or something. So they're definitely cheaper tablets. The Kindle Fire XD is, you know, $200.
Justin Edelstein: I always go on the cheap end of the tablet.
Jason Atwood: Yeah, it's something you buy for a while. on the high end of the laptop and then low-end on the tablet. Yeah, I just I just want it. I go on the low end of the phone too. Like that space. Are you talking about storage space? Yeah. That low end. You have an iPhone 5. That's not low end. But the low end of the... You go get a galaxy for two bucks. Storage. That's like saying I always buy... I buy the low end of the Ferrari. I get the 329. I get the cheapest Ferrari. I get the cheapest Ferrari I can get. Yeah, it is basically. You're not the low end of anything. You're buying the most expensive phone and most expensive tablet on the market. You're the low end? But at the low end.
Guest: Low end Ferrari. There are more expensive phones than the $200 phone I bought. The Porsche Boxster. It's not $200 phone. It is. It's a $650 phone. It's $200. No, subsidized. That's right. $650 phone. Yeah, but it's $200. No, that's incorrect. $200. Still incorrect. You can say it a hundred times. $200. And it's still uncorrect.
Justin Edelstein: Let's do a pick because mine has to do with that phone. Good.
Jason Atwood: Make your cloud folks at pick of the week. This is the lamest pick of the year. Why is this lame? This is the total lamest pick of the year. I started using it. Why is this lame? This is the lamest pick. Go ahead, make your pick.
Justin Edelstein: Hold on. This is coming from someone who's picked summer 12 as their pick.
Jason Atwood: You can't say this is the lamest pick. That was the lamest pick.
Justin Edelstein: Of six months ago. I'm picking iOS. Like you've done that before so knock it off. Alright. I'm picking the Reminders app. Let me tell you why. Alright. Because you've probably never even used it. I've given it a chance. So I just got, you know, my iPhone 5. I didn't have the 4S so I never had Siri. I did have the Reminders app. Never really found it all that useful. Yes, but I found that Siri is useful for two things and two things only. Yes setting timers So like I'm cooking something Siri set a timer for six minutes. Yep. She does that really well Siri remind me when I get home that I need to pick up paper towels. She does that amazingly well. Okay nose When I'm home, and a little pop-up reminder comes up and says, go buy paper towels.
22:38 Justin Edelstein: Yeah, it's location-based reminders. And it syncs across to my OS X device. Yeah. So they now have the reminders app on there too. It's not OmniFocus. It's not even do.com, although in some ways it's better, because it's easier to get reminders for tasks into it. Because I can just hit a little button or just... put my phone up to my ear and just tell Siri what I want her to remind me to do and when.
Jason Atwood: You know, abs... I don't know. I said this is exactly the same. Reminders, there's better ones. Yeah, but I think this one's pretty good. Want me to boil your mind? OmniFocus reads from reminders. Doesn't really. So you can actually talk to Siri and OmniFocus will pick it up.
Justin Edelstein: I can have OmniFocus pick up Siri reminders. That's correct. How do I do that? Your mind just get blown. I want to do that Then I stopped I stopped. I'm just gonna pick Siri Wow, I'm just getting used to Siri Siri and I are like Acquaintances right now. We're not buddies. We're acquaintances because I've started to use her a little bit for some of these little tasks and she's She's she's easier to use to do that kind of thing like if I you know Using the phone as an alarm clock set my alarm clock for tomorrow morning at 430 a.m.
Jason Atwood: Which is not when I would yeah, and she sets it for you know Friday at 534 30 p.m. Oh, she's good after watching my wife use it to like get the weather and having her talk to it four times Siri the weather and I was like do you know that it's one swipe away from you at all point? No you gotta know when to use it when to not use it. Alright I mean I don't use reminders because I use OmniFocus but I have been playing around with OmniFocus pick up the reminders out of Siri. I'll show you how to do that after the podcast because no one else is interested. Maybe tomorrow. And I'm going to pick because we are huge fans of weather apps.
Justin Edelstein: Yes, and I was just saying to you the other day that I think Dark Sky is the best weather app on the planet. Was. You're going to pick a new one? I'm going to pick one that's better. So.
Jason Atwood: Easy navigation to weather. So you get to the main screen and you see, oh, it's very clean. 59 in cloudy. It tells you what degree is going to be in the next couple hours. You can get the next 16 hours of time. Sometimes I want to know if it's going to be 15 hours, or 42 hours. So you go sideways and give you that. I'm bad. So it basically does everything every app does but does it in the most clean and easy way? Stick with dark sky. No this is this is a dark sky Doesn, it doesn't do real weather. It does that's gonna be the next four days. No, it doesn't the your iPhone a b is actually just not
28:03 Guest: I wish I could put notifications there, but anyway, check the weather.
Justin Edelstein: The The You
