00:10 Jason Atwood: This is the 248th episode of Quadpocus Week! For the first week of August 2016. This episode is titled, Who Brought Who? I'm host Jason Edward and joining me with his thing is the co-host Justin Edelstein.
Justin Edelstein: So you know I'm that guy who when you're watching a television show and they mention a fictional website or a phone number or whatever I'm that guy who goes to that website. and sees if they did a really good job or not.
Jason Atwood: And some phone numbers, the five, five, five, no, no, no, no, no, no. Website is a phone number.
Justin Edelstein: I did. OK. I said they mentioned them, like, you know, in Breaking Bad, the save Walter White dot com. I went to it and they did a great job with it. It's like, oh, wow, you paid, really good attention to that. I like when. They did that when shows do that but you you said 1-800 permission the permissioner calm never and doesn't exist Please
Jason Atwood: Please try to call that number figure out what that is I like I mentioned I'm that guy who would well you can actually go to the permissioner calm. Okay, we have an agenda. I'm not going to though. We have an agenda. We're going to talk about not one, but two little bloggy poos that came up. One that's next. Week, but since it's kind of like time dependent, we're going to talk about it. I was going to want some dream force. We haven't really talked about dream force, but it's coming. And then we have a whole bunch of who bought who's you buy me, I buy you this bike, this company buys this. We'll talk about what they mean, why, if we care. Then we'll wrap it up and oh my goodness you actually have a you have a pick Yeah, and you don't look at you with your picks and you don't
Justin Edelstein: So there I do well you do but it ain't there How about that boom?
Jason Atwood: Oh, come on. We've picked out no, it's the new one totally pick a Siri built in All right, so first first up why don't you guys look since you're writing this bar did for next week? Yeah, it's already written Oh, yes, do this one first all right?
Justin Edelstein: You can maybe by the time you actually listen to this, you may be able to read this on the blog post at blog.arcasync.com Good job, remember that. Or maybe you'll have to come back and check it out a little bit later. But it's the introduction of the nonprofit CRM Summit. nonprofit serum summit is being hosted by our friend missy longshore of longshore consulting who has sat in this studio in this very studio and had a conversation with us off mic off mic, name them three name them Adam Turman
03:30 Jason Atwood: Eric Cole my love your heart Yeah, that's it. Yeah, that's all that's it That's all been two people sitting in the room with us while we've done the podcast the partners will not be named very quiet And the other employee who was not coming in funny. They just have to be quiet because I think we were doing like the salencios por favor Yes, that's it They laughed a little. There might have been a one or two. All right.
Justin Edelstein: Anyways, there's this nonprofit serum summit. You can go to www.nonprofitcrmsummit.com and you can check out this cool free event. It's running from August 1st through 12th. So it's over. It's half over by the time you listen to this. Sorry. but it's free and then there'll be a little bit of a upgrade charge after the the actual event is over and I believe it's like 97 dollars or something like that sorry missy if i'm messing this up but she's on this thing well she'll i think she will be so anyway i wrote a little post just introducing it, linking out to it. I'm speaking at it. You s- You're speaking at it tomorrow. I'm speaking at it later on next week. And there's a couple of tracks. There's the nonprofit executive track for Sustainable Tech Strategy.
Justin Edelstein: And then there's track two, which is nonprofit professionals sustain your success. That's the track you're speaking on. It's the track. I'm speaking on, I wrote one about driving adoption with Salesforce Actions. You're speaking about getting things done because that's all you speak about. All I talk about. And yeah, remember to check out the amazing event at nonprofitesummit.com and also join the conversation on Twitter using hashtag N-P-O-C-R-M. Excellent.
Jason Atwood: Check it out. Yeah. So it's a summit, but it's like it's a virtual summit. Very virtual. Right. So I'm not, you say I'm speaking tomorrow. You are. But I spoke.
Justin Edelstein: No, you're speaking tomorrow. But I spoke. Right, right and you will and you will be you know The best part about this is for all of our listeners, you know What are our listeners that what are listeners gonna love about this?
Jason Atwood: Yeah, what is that? It's video. It is video They get so you get to see us first time for the first time for the first time I don't, I don't know the song. alright so go check that out, very cool. Good job Missy for putting it together and basically goading us into doing it.
Justin Edelstein: I don't think there's a lot of goading. She asked nicely, it's amazing what happens when you ask nicely. I know and you say please and thank you and all sorts of stuff.
Jason Atwood: Very organized too, like all the communication, all the stuff is just like, yup, setup calls. It's a whirlwind. A whirlwind. Thank you Missy. Yes, so go check that out. I don't. Yes, check it out now because it's free now and then it goes, thank you. Free now.
06:41 Justin Edelstein: Check it, check it out.
Jason Atwood: So the next one's actually an interesting blog post. I mean, they're all interesting. Actually, it's interesting. Yours feels very promotional about,
Justin Edelstein: Mostly. Yeah, self-promotion is the best kind of promotion.
Jason Atwood: Written by Mariel Espinal. Salesforce bootcamp volunteer experience. So It's kind of an interesting thing that Salesforce, again, Salesforce does so much stuff out there in the universe. This one is a boot camp to help underrepresented groups of people and technology learn about Salesforce, the basics and the little stuff. So it's really interesting. Again, they're using Trailhead as a way of doing it, but this blog post goes over the experience of going to it. These are the things that I didn't even know, I just didn't know that Salesforce does this stuff.
Justin Edelstein: Didn't too... So Marielle was a part of it and wasn't Amy as well a part of it. So two Arkus employees, I believe were a part of it. tweeted about it at the time. It happened a couple of weeks back. Now we're just reflecting back on it in a blog post. Just talking about what it is, what was happening during the training, Mariel's personal experience throughout the actual boot camp. Pretty cool. I'm happy to see that this... mentoring program exists out there and it's happening at a college, at Memorial College. I would be interested in, seeing over the course of time, like Salesforce courses popping up at universities and where they even put them. Is this a business course? Is this a technology course? What is it? Are there different levels? Where does it go?
Justin Edelstein: That's kind of a leave it out there topic for people to discuss later. Where would a Salesforce course go? If Salesforce admin, whatever, at a university. Right.
Jason Atwood: Where would you put it? I'd put in technology, but that's just because I'm old school. I guess, but it could. What are you going to put in?
Justin Edelstein: Theory. In theory, you could put it in the business department.
Jason Atwood: Yeah, I wouldn't put it in the business department. Just me anyway cool cool experience cool Write up blog that our kasink comm check it out All right next up the biggest of big news So biggest the best it's the best is the greatest ever amazing greatest ever amazing It's happening now spectacular not happening. It's not happening yet But it's happening dream force 16 hashtag. Yes is, happening october 3rd 4th 5th Yeah, 4th at 6 3rd 4th think it's 4 through 7 4 through 7. Yeah 4 4 7 I 4 7 Of october. Yeah, thousand 16 you can register now.
09:46 Justin Edelstein: It's only 1799 boy, that's like $1,799 not free like the non-profit CRM summit No, which is free,
Jason Atwood: Right and that's like better speakers because we- because we're speaking So Dreamforce for those if you've just never heard of this ever again I don't know how that's possible, but I'm going to say it anyway is the Salesforce conference that is a mix. It's a very different than most conferences that it is a mix of partners and employees and admins and customers and prospects evangelists There are a few protesters, which is always nice just throwing a few protesters in there It's the world's biggest conference now.
Justin Edelstein: There's gonna be some definite protesters this year John Lewis is speaking nice So, you know mr. Sit in guy who organized, organized the sit-in most recently in Congress and has been an activist his entire life is one of the speakers.
Jason Atwood: So if you have never had the chance to go to Dreamforce, it is an incredible experience. I would say if nothing else, you get some great speakers and you get a good concert. Speaking of which, you too. You too. Which is you think it's Gotta be their biggest headliner.
Justin Edelstein: Oh, 100%. Right? Hot Chili Peppers. There's nothing even compares. I mean, Foo Fighters, they're in a arena. Foo Fighters are an arena band, right? When I say an arena, or a stadium band, right? They play in baseball stadiums. Mean you two will sell out stadiums for like 10 nights in a row I Mean that they're they're definitely the biggest show they've ever had for sure And so and they've and they've winded up they've landed up a couple of good speakers I'm looking forward to quite a few of the I mean Tony Robbins is speaking again again I think I'm gonna skip that one. I've tried it twice. Yes. We shouldn't just don't do it I did just watch the Netflix I'm not your guru Tony Robbins special and I thought it was actually very good But Melinda Gates, that's pretty there.
Justin Edelstein: That is big time We have Deborah Dugan the CEO of red who will be talking actually about red and the non-profit stuff. Very cool. Billy Jean King who I'm really excited to see. I've actually met Billy Jean King. Oh I just saw another person's a repeat. I'm very very excited. You see the repeat? the at the bottom row You Foundation and they were eradicating diseases in Africa, so I wonder if he must have moved on he finished it They did eradicate the disease That's true. Sorry. Sorry later So yeah, they got tons of speakers and and I remember last year Some of these speakers will be speaking during the big Keynote, yeah, others will be like have their own special session like Tony Robbins has kind of his own like special thing But then they also break them down and we'll put them in like the year Baboina Arts Center right and I remember last year going to see I think it was the general manager of the Golden State Warriors.
13:38 Justin Edelstein: Oh yeah. And he was talking about team building exercises and things like that. And it was in the Yerba Wayness Center. I remember like the line wrapped all the way around the building. I'm like, oh man, this is not like how am I going to get in here? You get in, it's worth it. If you really want to see somebody. Can I show up early? Yeah, show up early. Nowhere they're speaking. I'm sure Billie Jean King will talk all about, you know, women in technology and right and. it looks like there's some serious like civil rights to this people are like Billie Jean and I before mentioned john Lewis Yeah, I wonder where I wonder where though it seems like it's it seems like it's on track right there kind of does Activism yeah So anyway, really exciting.
Jason Atwood: Again, the speakers, I think the speakers are kind of my favorite favorite. Are you you you excited for the astronauts? the There are things you can do outside of Salesforce. You can do trailheads, you can watch sessions, you can go sessions at the world tours, you can learn about the new marketing cloud stuff. But like the CV speakers, you're not going to get that anywhere else. So I suggest live. Right, I suggest If you have to make a choice like should I go see this incredible speaker or should I go sit in marketing cloud? You know enhancements for winter 1517.
Justin Edelstein: Yeah, I mean you have the right the product keynotes versus like the people like go see people Go see Al Gore talk about the environment. Yes, you know, we saw Hillary Clinton. We saw Bill Clinton I mean, these are obviously how sales place
Jason Atwood: Leans that way and those are the types of politicians that they bring in. It's interesting to cross pose that with their General Motors.
Justin Edelstein: Yeah, well, they'll figure it out. I'd do some business too. It's true.
Jason Atwood: It's kind of always the interesting part I find of Dreamforce is how they mix pure capitalism. Sell, sell, sell with Coca Cola, GM, Yacht, with give back. Yeah, whatever. Like what? So just one, cause we'll probably talk about Dreamforce, we'll probably have a whole episode about it. We're gonna be, oh, we're gonna be live at Dreamforce? Yes we will. I don't know if that's public yet, but we're gonna be live at Dreamforce. We'll be there. I'm all about breaking the rules today. We're always there. We will be there, but we'll be podcasting from there. So we'll start, so start figuring out when you want to see us, where we'll... Sorry to tell you when we're gonna be podcasting. We do have swag. We'll bring it this year. We will. We forgot to bring it last year.
16:40 Jason Atwood: Have it. It's sitting right behind me. Alright. So, yeah, I was gonna say one thing. What quick thing, what's your first thing you're looking forward for Dreamforce?
Justin Edelstein: One thing. YouTube. I mean, come on. It's a YouTube concert. That's true.
Jason Atwood: They're really great. I might have to break my streak. They're so good.
Justin Edelstein: I mean we went we went and saw them here in the garden. Oh, yeah, we're on this sort of this tour I thought tour ended, but I'm assuming there's like a little extension of that tour It was amazing. Yeah, that was amazing. It's really great They're four people who are just just make sonic boom like they're just they're they're amazing These four people. You should write reviews. I know. These are four people who make sonic boom. Make sonic boom. I think those astronauts might disagree with you. Could we just change the name of this to make sonic boom? Make sonic boom? No.
Jason Atwood: I would say this is, so I'm looking forward to... It's the biggest. Well, it's my past. It's my tenth.
Justin Edelstein: Oh, do you think you get like a plaque or a pen? No, I've been tweeting at him. I've been tweeting at him. It's like a button.
Jason Atwood: I would think a button would be appropriate.
Justin Edelstein: I actually think pin, like a nice like die-cast pin. You used to get like those little like crystal things for speaking. Customer heroes. Yes. Just for speaking. Yes. We don't get that anymore. Yeah, that used to be very special. Yes, I have one.
Jason Atwood: But anyway, this will be my tenth green force in a row, and I'm moving forward to just kind of like... Taking it all in and that's a long so that's a long period of time to do one thing and so interesting going on nine Yeah, I'm pretty bitter bitter about bitter about I didn't get invaded that first one Well, he's doing that.
Justin Edelstein: I probably should have believed the Johnson really needed to go. We're just gonna like throw out there Like Kevin Riley names out there. Why not just throw names throwing names Oh We're sonic booming right now. All right, let's move off this. These are games that just don't go on LinkedIn and look for them. Or now you will. Now you will. She looks pretty well. She looks probably unemployed. She looks pretty well. The other is probably just chugging along. She looks pretty well. Are you okay? Who sits there?
Jason Atwood: Do you realize now how stupid it was? Well, it's totally ten years later, but now you like get out of it Oh, yeah, that was really that was like galactic Lee stupid.
Justin Edelstein: Yeah, but it was it felt so good Yeah, it felt so right both parts of it
Jason Atwood: And the posting yeah, picture taking and maybe we'll tell that to people Not for this fuck no, it's not this podcast The Justin's done in the past Episode one we will start next month.
Justin Edelstein: We can record that one daily as opposed to this one, which is whenever. So true. All right. This is number 248. We're pretty close to 250, which I think is a bigger deal than 200. But here's the thing. We said we would do video at 250.
19:41 Jason Atwood: Guess what we just did or are doing as part of the nonprofit CRM Summit? Video done and done. We just did it. Thank you. Well, that's our next two podcasts. 49 and 50. Oh, done. All right, done and done So let's talk about our purchases here What'd you buy? The first one I don't really care about That's because it has a lot of product. I don't know about tons of product,- of. ERP. ER. ERP. ERP. ERP. ERP the go. ERP. And what, and we thought that like 15 years ago more interesting the Yeah, he's on the phone.
Justin Edelstein: And she was really very fond of her speak live
Jason Atwood: Was no longer a fan and I remember saying this at the time I said and the So my point was I just felt this like retrospective where they're like, I'll tell us about how you've done like her story Has still it's not been written and really at this point. It's not much of a story. She was really big at Google She went to Yahoo and took it over and she'd been there for about a year and a half at that point and the company Really wasn very well that It's not impressive to me. Anyway, so Verizon, I mean, they're just buying their internet property and... I don't know, what is Yahoo anymore? What is Yahoo anymore? Is it a search and do you go to Yahoo to search? No. Is it their fantasy football site?
22:42 Jason Atwood: I mean, what is anybody on Yahoo for?
Justin Edelstein: I think they have decent mobile apps. Like their Yahoo Sports mobile app is pretty good. I use Yahoo weather, I will say. So like their mobile apps are pretty decent. So maybe they... I don't know. I have to imagine that there are lots of people that are still using them for various different people content and People are probably still using their email service. I have to imagine They must have lots of traffic because I mean, how do you just value something like four billion. Billion dollars That's actually a lot of money.
Jason Atwood: It's not, it's like, it pays on the dollar to what they were. It's still a lot of money.
Justin Edelstein: Like it's four billion dollars. If they're nothing, if they're like legitimately nobody cares, then they're not worth four billion dollars.
Jason Atwood: Okay, you know what wasn't worth four billion dollars? Quip. Quip was bought for what, 750?
Justin Edelstein: So it's a collaboration platform or a word processor. So I both I think it's like I think it's like Google Sheets and Docs with collaboration together.
Jason Atwood: You know, they said that Salesforce or Microsoft was kind of looking at it. It seems like.
Justin Edelstein: It seems like an interesting one, you know? Corral you can't possibly have all of them because most recently there's been tons of Like machine learning and and and AI I didn't send ya Wow Lots of Tons they just buy stuff.
Jason Atwood: They just buy stuff buying stuff mobile metrics media metrics so interesting, you know interesting in that they want to get into the What I would say that sort of is is a hot market Dropbox just released their sort of note sharing collaboration tool kind of a play for Evernote is doing that. Apple and their new new notes is going to have collaborative notes. So two people in the notes same time. I mean a Google Docs has had and Google Wave had a long time ago. they're not good at it.
25:46 Justin Edelstein: They're not even good at files.
Jason Atwood: No. Well, there's files. There's content. There's documents. Yeah,
Justin Edelstein: Exactly. So they're not, they're not very good at. unstructured data. Right. And they're not good at files because there's
Jason Atwood: Experience otherwise not so much on the mobile no on a desktop you can i wasn't there a feature you can only do on the mobile with those
Justin Edelstein: Like lightning right now on a desktop now you can just relate a note to a whole bunch of things many what's many who's many who's so many what but even still it creates like this this content record, basically a file chatter file for lack of a better way of explaining it. And I don't think those are very good. They're not they're not the way people think about files. Like people think about files and in a directory in like a directory structure folder in folders. And Deltar's just never got that plus.
Jason Atwood: Once the files in there it's sort of dead Things that are that are that they're done like a PDF a sign It's done little thing like
Justin Edelstein: A real like let's just call it a note, but really more like a Google Doc That was associated to a record that more than one person could be in right if this does that I want it Well, that's what this does.
Jason Atwood: Great, I want it. But it's, well, you're two years away if they decide to do anything with it. But anyway, so an interesting purchase. I want it. I want it now. Okay. Give me now. Well, one other thing I'll just promote. I just did a MVP office hour. So I don't know if people know about this, but they should know about it. So the MVP program, we've talked about that. Buh-bye, I'm a PMP But they do a office hours twice a month, the second and last, or first and fourth, first and third Fridays. Anyway, you can follow their Twitter, MVP office hours. But it's an hour-long call-in show, where you can call in and ask people, you know, their MVPs are on it. and kind of get free advice, free questions. I mean, obviously you're not gonna get like deep consulting, although I thought I did a pretty good job, but just another resource.
Jason Atwood: Where should I go to learn about security? I'm like, well, obviously, trailhead, but it's just an interesting resource. I have never done one. You've sat behind me quietly, you know. So you needed help. So I need you to Google something for me, thanks a lot. But really, kind of just another cool resource if you don't know about it. Again, it's on Fridays, MVP office hours, twice a month, and one hour. And it's just a call-in. You call in, you register your call-in, and then you can ask questions. You can pretty much go anywhere on any question. They have to do... But if you're looking for more ways to get more data, to get more information, you need help on stuff, it's yet another resource to go to. All right, well, talking about resources, well, let's do, are we gonna do it again next time on?
29:30 Jason Atwood: We're gonna make it up as we go. We don't know what we're gonna do next time. Even if there will be a next time, we don't even know. We should make that a thing. Listen to this podcast, because it could be the last.
Justin Edelstein: 250 could be the last. Yeah, I mean, you know that you'll see us over the nextBweek on the... Yeah, on the summit. The summit.
Jason Atwood: That's it. Were RKs where we both We're both wearing our Arkus gear. I think we were. I think I was. Alright, so let's get your CloudFocus app. Pick of the week, please.
Justin Edelstein: So I. I am picking... YouTube music by Google Why is this terrible pics is terrible? Oh side note. Wait, wait, wait Why is it every time I pick anything your initial reactions just like terrible? This is pretty much pretty much a terrible. Why? No, I don't know. No, like like what's the reason? Well, why don't you tell me why it's not awesome before I talk about it?
Jason Atwood: No, it's awesome I feel like you picked this before. No, you know what you picked? It's new. How did I pick it? OK, you know what you picked? Just like this? That it was terrible and I'm predicting? Twitter music. It was an app that just showed you. Yeah, how many times have since you picked that? Well, this is actually a competitor to like Apple Music. It's a competitor. OK, let's hear about it. I want to hear about it. Please tell me. I have the app on my. Okay, what does it do pointing to it?
Justin Edelstein: You can search and find basically any music music out there that's on YouTube. Yeah, and I don't know they might have like some other way to get to other things because it's not just stuff on YouTube because while they do add in the It's kind of why it's got the awesome factors that it adds in the video aspect. Right. So all the stuff that's on YouTube. Currents. Bring in like just concerts and whatever. Right. Bring that in. But also just you can hit on an artist page and you can get the albums, you can get songs, you can get all sorts. Fun stuff, playlists, covers, et cetera. They say a nearly endless catalog. I don't know where they're getting it from. I have no clue. It is free. They have a premium model. It does.
Justin Edelstein: Yes. So it has a 1299. Mom, you can pay 1299 if you want. And basically that's ad free the. And offline. Nice. You can download like basically just, you know. take the music with you offline and what they call an offline mix I've got it on my phone I played around with it a little bit it's neat it's fun to type in a band that you like and be able to just have everything broken out and even and click on like the videos right videos are kind of cool like videos yeah bring back the music video and an album or a you know a mix like a playlist that somebody made so you can say that this is like not awesome but i actually think it's pretty well built it's pretty well organized and i like the way it works now will it replace my apple music probably not but i also don't I actually listen to Apple Music more and more now on my computer than I do on my phone.
33:21 Justin Edelstein: The music is more for the computer and my television.
Jason Atwood: I listen to a lot. I listen on television. My picnics will be good for that. I listen on my computer. And then I really like the offline. But I just go, like, I like to run. And so like this morning, I went for a run and I go in, I hit a music, I hit a playlist, I hit offline and in my apartment downloads it all within seconds. It's very quick. And then I go into my running app and I say, use this playlist. And then I just go for run and it's like done and no downloading during one running I'm. So why did my pick?
Justin Edelstein: Why does it suck again? Oh, okay. Yeah.
Jason Atwood: My pick is super awesome. I did not pick it before because it was released four days ago. And it was announced at WWDC, which we talked about last time, which is the Apple TV Remote app. So if you have a new next-gen Apple TV, or you have an old Apple TV, well, if you have a new generation Apple TV, you notice that the... The remote is super awesome. You can talk to it. You can gesture on it. It's really, really nice. It's much better than in the old, like, quicker one on here. We have the old quicker one here. Right? It has like three buttons and it's okay. But the new one, you can talk Siri into it. Well, now this is the app that does all that on your phone. So you don't need to go find the remote anymore because you got it on your phone.
Jason Atwood: Which they've always had but now it's the new version of the remote but it didn't have Siri right? That's all I didn't have touch No, did it didn't have a touch? It didn't have the the gestures that this thing has plus this is
Justin Edelstein: Now the whole entire remote app Was just like a blank slate. All you did was touch and float around are you talking?
Jason Atwood: There's no gestures touch There's no gestures and more importantly, when you have to enter in some text, you can do it now on your phone. Which is the same a the old remote.
Justin Edelstein: Yeah. So really, they just put Siri on the remote app and said, here's a brand new thing, but they just for you can do it. on it. Yeah.
Jason Atwood: Yeah. It's great. pick. Plus, as you're watching things, you can see things where they are, you can fast forward. Yeah, you did a great job. It's awesome. It's the best. Yeah, I'm sure we haven't picked that yet either. It's good. Sure. It came out two days Alrighty, maybe he'll stop talking again. I'll see you in the summit buddy. Alright, so that's it. We'll be back next week or maybe not. You know, CloudFocus semi-monthly. Follow Justin if you care to listen to his. Diatribe at just Edelstein follow me at Jason M Atwood follow Arkus at Arkus Inc. We're on the Facebook key Facebook.com slash forward slash Arkus Inc success community and power of us hub We're in both we have groups in there. You can subscribe in there So if you don't want any other way of getting your CloudFocus Weekly, you will always get it in there Which is nice.
Jason Atwood: We're on the LinkedIn in the Google Plus with two other people and If you're looking to leave us reviews, I think we need to start pushing for reviews I think we need to start, so we're gonna start doing this. If we get new reviews, we'll read them at the top of the show. We'll read off new reviews, well if they're good. Actually if they're bad, that'd be funny too. No, no, don't leave us bad reviews because they're funny.
36:36 Justin Edelstein: Leave us good reviews that are funny. Leave me those bad reviews with five stars. Don't talk about a pet. Say this is... A good review, but I'm writing as a bad review because it's funnier that way. Padcast. Right. Just saying.
Jason Atwood: Tech butter. And so that's it. So as we always say, Justin and Jason saying, enjoy those cloudy days.
