Guest: I'm your host, Jason Atwood, and joining me for the very special episode, co-host Justin Edelstein. Justin, how, Justin, how are you?- I'm awesome. Thank you.
Justin Edelstein: You're, awesome. I'm ready to talk about television.
Jason Atwood: We've done streaming TV. We've done, I don't know, we've done a couple other that were just sort of, oh, we did like a home screen's fun. So this is in that vein. So if you like those, keep listening. If you don't like those, don't like the special episodes where we just make fun of each other, and talk about fun shows, hopefully shows that like other people are not watching. Kind of like, you know, we're not just gonna name like the top. 10 shows that people are watching that might be interesting keep listening otherwise thanks for the download see you next week yep when yeah just do abund little update so next week we're gonna do a special, episode another one and we're gonna talk specifically and only about the pack for Salesforce. So we'll do that next week.
Jason Atwood: That'll be next episode. But this week, let's get to getting so I gave you some homework. Get my homework as I'm apt to do well the first time ever but and I said let's go back. Let's come up with like the shows we're watching and make a list and come in and kind of just do a one-off back and forth of stuff we're watching.
Justin Edelstein: Go watch them on your streaming service. Okay. I'll kick it off. Like importance. I put them in an order of like, I think what I'd rather watch from like, Oh, favorite stuff down to the like, if you're going to watch anything, watch this first thing that I mentioned. So new show currently on season first season still going towards the end of it though. On FX. Atlanta. Atlanta is a fantastic, fantastic show. And here's the thing about Atlanta. So it's created by most of the episodes are written by its stars, Donald Glover. Yep. And He's hilarious from Community. He's from Community. He wrote for 30 Rock. He's just a great talent. And he... I mean... Tell me why I should watch this show. So. So this is... innovative show I've seen in a long time. I can't really necessarily describe to you what it's even about okay but it is what I just find it just wait I mean, you've been watching a show for an entire season and you can't describe what it's about.
04:08 Justin Edelstein: Because it could be about anything. Any given episode could be about anything. That's... the show. It's about Atlanta, sort of. And, a broad stroke, and a a rapper and a guy who's trying to be the rappers manager and his little entourage and his troubles at home and Donald Glover is the manager So it's like his issues at home, but they've done some incredible episodes that are just off the wall. Innovative, haven't seen anything like it. Type of episodes. And you're. Just drawn right into it. I will guarantee that this show. R up finger on like what it would be like on IMD say to a different views are it versus on their way up through Atlanta rap scene it like you have a watch it to to get it it's it's really let's a very different so Atlanta on FX yeah I'm gonna watch it on FX now if you want to catch up.
Jason Atwood: I'm gonna, It's on on Saturday 1130. It's on the channel called... I don't know. It's on Saturday glared. It's on on Saturday 1130. when you get the hoo plus and you get the without the commercial it's great because you can watch basically but it the next day sunday when does it come?
Justin Edelstein: It's sunday come on so i was looking for it on sunday because i wanted to watch like the clips..........,.......... and they weren't there.
Jason Atwood: So I love it because again it's on who I can watch it. I basically basically watch it in the gym. It's a perfect time. It's about an hour and seven minutes total. I can skip over it. It's way too long. No, I skip over the two musics. Way too long. No, well you and don't work out for the night but I really just should
07:27 Justin Edelstein: Should know cuz cuz the musical artist definitely matters cuz sometimes it's like who is that and I don't care I skip over it every time. I don't care if it's any it doesn't matter.
Jason Atwood: I'm skipping over that I go right to I kind of like ours was last week. She was pretty good But still I watched like his little I was like, I'm not interested go to the thing So anyway, sorry live on Hulu Plus prospective without commercials I don't know. I've really just I've gotten back in obviously it's been around for what 50 years is a 40 years 40 years 40 Something like that then they just got is the 40th. Oh crazy. So I was having life next All right, we have the original awesome.
Justin Edelstein: All right new show on Amazon. Okay an Amazon original Okay, British show called Fleabag. Okay. Six episodes. Yep. All released at one time so you could binge through them. They're half hour each. Hysterical. A woman is the star. It's sort of based off of her one woman show. She's kind of a wreck. She's kind of a fleabag. Yeah. She's, she's got a lot of emotional issues. It also is one of those shows that breaks the fourth wall where she's kind of talking at you, the camera, and like making little sly faces and remarks, and it makes the show a whole lot better. Really funny, really interesting, very British. Yes, Fleabag on... Amazon.
Jason Atwood: I'm going to pick one that I don't know if I mentioned this. Again, these are kind of my guilty pleasures. Not a lot of these are sort of high quality ones. But the wife and I have been very much enjoying the last chip. It's on season three. I think it's on FX. Don't even know. And we got caught up in it. Actually, she was watching it. Sometimes it's done again. I've admitted this in the past. We have different tastes in TV. Basically, she will watch any piece of garbage on TV. Be careful, she's listening. She does listen, but she knows this. She told me the other day. Yeah. And She'll watch just anything that's terrible and she'll just enjoy it and doesn't make any excuse about it. I, if I'm gonna watch TV, I want to watch something that's kind of enjoyable, but there's kind of different levels.
Jason Atwood: There's stuff I watch without anybody else. That's sort of the stuff I watch the gym. Then there's stuff I watch with the family, where we have family shows that all of us, you know, the adults in a 11 year old can watch. And then we watch stuff that can't watch with. the child because it's not appropriate. Last Ship Falls is not appropriate, but it is actually a very good action, fun storyline. It's the story of basically a plague that takes over the world, and there's one ship left, one military ship, and they have to kind of like find the answer, the cure. That was the first season. And now it's gone on, a lot of things are happening.
10:30 Justin Edelstein: Did they find more ships? It's well acted. It's got spoiler alert. Did they find more ships? I'm not going to tell you.
Jason Atwood: It's just, it's one of the shows that a lot of is. It's a great binge- As you watch, it has that 24-esque, the first couple of seasons of 24. It, probably awful. But it's not.
Justin Edelstein: It doesn't have that like, ding, ding, ding, ding, you know, You can now watch all of the episodes of the two seasons, but this is one of those shows on Hulu that they I love Difficult People and it got of better in its second season which is great. It is a really, really, really, well the title describes it really well. It's about two very, very mean people and how they treat other people and other people being really, really mean. We have Julie, who's the woman, and does he go by Billy on the show? It's Billy on the street, but I don't know what his actual name of his character is. It's like a New York's it's like two New York's anarchy. Very New York. Yes. Like there's so many references to Broadway and shows things in New York that are happening and there's Broadway actors on it.
Justin Edelstein: And I mean, then you the more you the more you watch it, you pick up No, like you call like you call your significant other like honey, or hon, or babe, or whatever. He calls her something different every single time and it's just like it's a random object. Ottoman, search role. Like I was calling the little lady search-search role a few weeks ago.
Jason Atwood: Well, I can pick something that I haven't even seen. That's terrible.
Justin Edelstein: You can't do that. I can't like me picking apps that I haven't seen. All right. Well, there's a time. Go on.
13:31 Jason Atwood: All right. So I will say that show is mildly amusing. It's gets kind of like, I don't know. They're just, I have a thing with shows that if I don't like the characters, then I just don't want to watch these people. Right. It's impossible. And you kind of don't care about them because you don't like them. Cause they're really not. good people. In the show.
Justin Edelstein: All right. Guilty pleasure. Guilty pleasure in everything. You haven't given him quality thing yet.
Jason Atwood: I'm waiting for the... Well, because I'm not watching quality stuff right now. I'm watching a lot of guilty pleasure stuff. All right. I'll I'll I'll find one that we're both watching since you two are the one that we're watching. We're both watching. I've been enjoying it. It's got some funny moments might be on your list might be I think it's on FX It's only season one episode for Son of Zorn ah I watched the first episode of that. Oh, you haven't watched all four. Okay? It's so it's a it's a comedy at the sitcom. It's basically about if Kona and the barbarian the cartoon character was real in real life, but was a cartoon character. So stupid. It came back to be back with his son who, he left years ago. It's funny. I, I can't see it lasting very long, but again, it's one of the things that you're in the gym, you're like, oh, I got 20 minutes.
Jason Atwood: Oh yeah, son of Zorn. It's got some great cast in it. who's the guy? Cheryl Hines. Yeah Cheryl Hines is in it. From I'm gonna curb your enthusiasm. It's just it's it's it's there's some there's some moments in it because again he's from a fictional world but it's it's a heft to be true right that he's from Zelandia or whatever it is and so he's just all these little references it's kind of fun it's it's a kind of a fun show again he's Kind of wacky and but he's somewhat likeable because a real job and he has to live in this real world. Anyway, sometimes. Sometimes they're in total again, not quality, not giving you quality here. I have a few that are quality. This is not quality. I'm going, I'm going to hit you with great.
Jason Atwood: Great quality right now.
Justin Edelstein: So this is a very serious show. Okay. It's called show me a hero. Okay on HBO You can catch it on HBO Go or HBO Now. It was on in the summer of 2015. It was a miniseries, kinda like the night out was this year. And it, I mean, first of all, it's David Simon, Simon. So automatically it gets a watch from me. Because he's a genius. Okay, and then it stars Oscar Isaac who's fantastic in it It also has some Winona Ryder in there and a few other names that you would certainly know and it follows it's a true story about Yonkers in the 80s and it follows a politician named Nick Wasisco And his basically his his trials, tribulations and then Yonkers having issues with public housing and how how they wanted to put public housing on.
16:41 Justin Edelstein: Let's just call it the wrong side of the highway. If you get what I'm saying. Yes. So. It really dives like a David Simon show does deep into the urban... I wanna call it like labyrinth of just how everything is interconnected. And it's just a really great show. And I don't think a lot of people have heard about it or of it. What's it on? It's on HBO. There's only six episodes. It's a mini-series. It's meant to be this six episode capsule. That's it. It starts and it ends and that's it. So there won't be more of them. It's and it's a great six episode season of television. that you can just consider like a long movie.
Guest: I think you've actually suggested that to me. I've suggested it to you for sure.
Jason Atwood: Once I get done with all of the Son of Zorn. Yeah, once you get through Zorn. Well, again, there are things like I can watch alone and the things I can't watch alone. And so the things I can't watch alone, you got to schedule. Honestly, here's the deal. I'm a huge football fan and during the fall football's on three nights a week. yeah, three nights a week. And so it kind of takes up three nights a week of television watching. All right, here's, now this is a, this is a double pick because it's a, it's a past and future. It's kind of the same show, but not really. And I'm not just picking the show. a piece of the show. It's so many episodes, but I want you to just think about this one piece to this show.
Jason Atwood: So the pick is Top Gear. So it's a British television show about cars. Please, please, keep on. I know you wave your hands, or you're closing your eyes because you're about as a car person as this chair. But that's not it. Because they review cars, they drive cars and whatever. And it's. and It's a very funny show in itself, but you have to be a car person to like it. I'm not saying to watch those. What I am saying to go watch is their special episodes. So they've done 19 seasons, and I think they've done about five of these special episodes. And here's the thing of the special episodes. And and I'll the wife enjoys the show tremendously for these episodes. They're about two hours long each. and they go into a, they basically drop off the three hosts in some foreign land, they give them a map, and they give them three cars that are all of the same type of car.
Jason Atwood: Sometimes they're all where sports cars, sometimes they're all like trucks, sometimes whatever, and they have to get from point A to point B. And it's a little bit of reality TV because there's problems, there's breakdowns, there's inside jokes.
Guest: But the characters in it, these hosts are so funny.
Jason Atwood: And the fun of them actually going to these beautiful areas like in Patagonia or Vietnam or they're stunning in Africa. Stunning. So I would watch one, just watch one. I'd say it doesn't really matter one. Botswana one is amazing. Patagonia is kind of funny because they actually got kicked out of the country. There's an India special. That's a great one too. Anyway, there's about six of them. on. Six or seven of them That's the the the first pick but the second side pick is that shows off the air They had a huge fight out fight with the hosts and they got fired and he said some bad things Amazon has picked it up. I feel like I need two picks here. No, no Amazon picked it up It's now I haven't watched the show. That's why I made it a double pick the grand tour They started another series the same hosts Not on BBC, not part of BBC anymore, part of Amazon, it's called the Grand Tour.
20:24 Jason Atwood: I haven't watched it yet, there's only like two episodes, but it's kind of, this thing was a 19 year show, 19 years of shows, and now they've all kind of moved over to Amazon, so it's kind of interesting. So that's my pick. It's Top Gear Special episodes, and then the Grand Tour, the new one on Amazon, which I haven't watched. Alright, I'm gonna move on to the Nick.
Justin Edelstein: The Nick like Nickabocker. K and ICK. Originally airs on Cinemax and it is about... The Knickerbocker Hospital, turn of the century, New York, so early 1900s, New York City, stars Clive Owen and Steven Soderbergh did all 20 episodes, I believe. It flows really well. It's got, I mean, I just love that time period in New York City. I think it's the best. Anything around... that time you get me but really shows like what was going on in the city both politically in a hospital what a hospital was even like what it was like being a surgeon in like 1903 like what a weird thing right and all these new new technologies that this like that's what it was all about like the doctor would create some new four step thing and then you would show it off during surgery and it'd be a big theater.
Justin Edelstein: That's really not like what the show is about. It's about this very troubled doctor and his trials and tribulations of making his way through life in the city and it goes into the deep depths of the city. Yeah, he's going to opie dens in you thinking like gangs in New York or something? Yeah, gangs in New York. That's what I was thinking. Yeah, that's about 40 years or 50 years earlier. the Nick. It's great. It's on Cinemax. I think you can catch it on Amazon at this point. Oh, because it has one of those crossovers. Well, the two seasons are on Amazon, I believe. Now. OK. Like kind of how you could catch HBO shows on Amazon.
Guest: All right. Another streaming one.
Jason Atwood: Again, I'm going to have to go back to some guilty guilty pleasure TV. I picked a great time. Serious. Here's an award winning show. The next one is not an award winning show, but it's fun. I do enjoy it. It's one of those reality like, you know, go into a place and things are wrong, scream and yell and then fix it or not fix it. You know, you've heard of Hell's Kitchen, them. It's with this main guy, Tom Cooper,
23:27 Guest: Who's fixed 100 million bars over the time period. Of course, Tapper is fixed the bars. John Tapper, I don't know, can you imagine?
Jason Atwood: And he goes into some bar and kind of does an analysis of it and then goes in and tries to help it. There's always something, like sometimes, it doesn't work out, sometimes it falls apart, sometimes whatever. There's a little bit of... Like it's interesting to learn about how bars do business and certain bars, you know, and the money behind it and the science. He's actually, you know, it's all about the science of bars. The thing that it has taught me is never to eat in a bar, ever, because they go in these back kitchens and I guess the regulations for bars like a bar kitchen versus like a restaurant kitchen. kind of different. It really hasn't taught you anything. It's taught me not to eat in bars that are like when you can see in the kitchen a little hot plate back there and they're like making your panini don't eat in that place.
Justin Edelstein: I've been to Dreamforce with you. I've watched you eat in bars. Yeah I don't eat in bars. I literally we just got done eating in bars. All right speed round. We done five.
Jason Atwood: Let's do two more each. Two more each. Two more? Alright,
Justin Edelstein: Go. Barco is one of my favorite shows. FX, two seasons now. Can't even tell if season one or season two is better. I think they're both great in their own right. season One is, it's oddly a, I guess season. One happens about 20 to 30 years after season two happens. So season one references an event and then season two was built around that event that happened in the past. Fargo's I just love the pacing of it. I love the quirkiness of it. I think the acting is fantastic. stick and... It kind of does what it wants. And I like the fact that they have this creative freedom to just do whatever they want and create this world of quirkiness. That is a lot like the movie, but really, you can tell it's a cousin of the movie.
Justin Edelstein: Right. But it has nothing to do with the movie, right? It has the feel. It has the location, the accent, the location. But other than that, it I think it stands on its own.
Jason Atwood: So Fargo. All right, I'm going to go HBO. Again, political season, although it's good all the time, although he doesn't do a lot of these shows, but they are so good when you watch them last week tonight with John Oliver.
Justin Edelstein: It is a very political one this past week. Yes. Well, he pretty much always has something political. No, the whole thing was. Yeah, just one big political event.
Jason Atwood: Again, John Oliver who came from the Daily Show, which I was gonna make a pic, but I think I picked it. in another thing so I'm not gonna pick the daily show.
26:28 Guest: Yeah, that's his own thing. So it's on HBO, it's 30 minutes,
Jason Atwood: You can get on HBO Go, HBO All Access, whatever they are. He's very good. He's very funny, a very funny guy, but he's also, he digs into issues and there are episodes that I've watched, like the one on 401ks, that... You go, you watch it and then think, oh crud, I need to go think about this. Because he's the mentioned some stuff that, so it's like, it's got the humorous side of it, but he goes deeper in on issues and does research. That one alone, if you want to on watch one, I don't know what episode it was, but he went in on 401Ks and his whole episode turned into like what they were doing at their, come you know at the last week tonight. and then how it turned into a show and research and stuff.
Jason Atwood: Pretty much, I mean, it's weekly, but it takes huge times off. I more. Yeah he I don't think it's more than 20. 22. I'll look it up. Go ahead look another one. Yup.
Justin Edelstein: Alright I'll go HBO 2. I'll go with the Jinx. I really enjoyed the Jinx. Oh okay. The I think it was the Jinx colon the life and life of Robert Durst. Yep. So the story of Robert Durst a six-part documentary on Robert Durst who I had no clue about but very fascinating gripping like it was it gets ya and you just want to keep watching it and the things that come up during it I don't want to really spoil it at all He's so fascinating just to watch this documentary about a guy that he signed on to even do it like as an interview he was during it. Fascinating, fascinating. For anyone, it's like one of those true crime type of things. I'll just throw two more in there that are like it. So I'll like it.
Justin Edelstein: So. It's also really good.
Jason Atwood: A It's just hard to describe it. I know I've suggested to you, you might have watched a couple episodes, maybe you haven't gotten hooked. What is it? Well, I'm going to say. So we talked a lot about Shark Tank. We love Shark Tank. You know, it's like a whatever fun show. So there's a spin-off on CNBC called The Prophet. And it is a reality show, but I don't want you to think about it that way. First of all the issues of their business and helps them sort of overcome some stuff. He becomes, and the wife would agree, this is a wife, this is actually a whole family show. We all love this show. The way he deals with the ways he deals with difficult people, the way he kind of like breaks things down, he becomes the character.
30:16 Jason Atwood: So, and like all these good shows, but he's really, really, really likeable and the way he kind of like can handle very difficult situations and some really crazy business owners who And a lot of ways like try to take advantage of him or go back on their deals. so it's a really, I think it's in its fourth season now. It's very good. I mean, I don't, if you're a business owner, you should watch it just because of the way he kind of breaks down business. If you just interested in seeing different kind of, you know, again, personalities. I don't know, it's a hard thing to say, but we really, really love this show. It's the one that when it comes out, if there's a ton of things on TiVo, in fact, there's another one sitting on my, that was just looking, there's one sitting on my TiVo that we'll all be watching tonight, because it's so good.
Jason Atwood: All right, that's it. Do you want to do honorary mentions or no? Speed round.
Justin Edelstein: Mmm, just like real quick. Alright really quick. I already mentioned the night of yep Everyone should know about that one at this point. Narcos on Netflix been watching that's very good Got in the Bob's burgers binge fest. Yeah, so like there's like six seasons of that on Netflix and the seventh is going on. Love me some Bob's Burgers.roversy.com dig into your little American politics for Maybe for the next couple of weeks while the
Jason Atwood: Great almost don't I've I kind of remember not remember but no it's true he's he's done a great job you're that's black Fun like if you just if you run out of things to watch a fun show on on on Hulu Call Hollywood game night Where celebrities and and celebrities kind of play like Pictionary and stuff kind of fun a serious one Great series NFL a football life again big football fans. Sometimes some of these episodes are amazing. There's one on one of our favorite players Curtis Martin. So that's good. And then this is just the guiltiest of all guilty pleasures. I'm almost embarrassed that I watch it. But we've been watching forever, which is survivor. See, Gen X versus millennials. So there's all this sort of talk about how they handle each other and obviously I'm a Gen Xer.
Jason Atwood: And I Thank you, Organize and you're not doing your thing. It's like yeah, that's just young people. That's not like a whole Whatever. Age group. So that's it. All right. Well, that's fun. That was a little fun episode. Things serious, but you know, gotta fill the airwaves. You can fall at just Just Eddlestein at his Twitter account. Just went over 3,000 followers. That's a lot.
33:53 Justin Edelstein: They had slipped a little. Oh really so like it fluctuates a lot. Oh, well, it's still a lot. I need a day Follow me at Jason and Atwood.
